Stream Monitoring - Phase 2

Looking south from Hobo Vista along Buffalo Flat Road. In the valley in the distance is Rt 45 near Laurelton. A short bushwhack to the north of this vista is where Buffalo Creek first emerges and begins to flow the 28 miles to the Susquehanna River.

Buffalo Creek seen at testing site #2 along Buffalo Flat Road. Slightly more than one mile downstream from the source, the creek flows (as above) for most of the year. During the driest parts of the summer the stream will be a mere trickle above ground.

On a cold Saturday last December, 2007 the hardy volunteer stream monitors found their way to nine sites along the 28 mile stretch of Buffalo Creek and made the first stream test of Phase 2.

Stream testing will be now be done quarterly. Some Phase 1 sites were retained and some new sites were added (see chart and map below). Site selection was based on the goals of the revised monitoring plan and on two major impacts to Buffalo Creek (acid deposition and agricultural runoff.)

Near the headwaters of Buffalo Creek BCWA is constructing a passive treatment wetlands in an attempt to mitigate the acid deposition problem that has drastically reduced the aquatic life in the first five miles of the stream. Three stream sites will be tested near this treatment basin: one above the basin intake, one below the basin output, and another 1.3 miles downstream of the basin output after Buffalo Creek has wandered through some dense growth - before entering 'The Gooseneck'. Five more sites will be tested along the main stem as Buffalo Creek flows toward the Susquehanna. One site will sample the waters of a tributary, Coal Run.

Braving the winter weather and the summer heat our volunteers will perform their stream tests and they will collect a one-liter sample which will be tested in a (Bucknell U) biology lab at a later time. This newly-implemented lab testing has reduced the amount of effort and time needed by our volunteers at the stream site. The lab testing will also provide us with more detailed analysis than during Phase 1 stream testing.
